Q1 – How common is hearing loss in older adults?

A1 – Half of people over the age of 85 have some form of hearing loss; while one third of seniors between 65 and 74 experience hearing problems.

Q2 – What causes hearing loss?

A2 – According to MedicineNet.com there are a few factors, including the natural aging process, buildup of earwax, exposure to very loud noises (especially when prolonged over an extensive period), viral or bacterial infections, heart conditions or stroke, head trauma, tumors, some medicines and heredity.

Q3 – What are the signs and symptoms that a senior or caregiver can look for to detect hearing loss?

A3 – If a senior is experiencing difficulty hearing over the phone; maintaining a conversation when two or more people are involved; needs to turn up the television or radio excessively loud (may cause others to complain); have trouble hearing due to background noise; seem to believe that others have the tendency to mumble; or have more trouble understanding when women or children speak a senior should consult his/her doctor.

Q4 – How does a doctor diagnose hearing loss?

A4 – A family doctor may diagnose an individual in their own office or provide a referral to an otolaryngologist. Initially, a doctor will require medical history and presence of hearing loss in the senior’s family. A thorough examination will be completed, and may even refer the individual on to see an audiologist for further tests.
