Senior Caregiving in NY: How, When and Why You Need to Talk to Them
Sooner or later your loved ones are going to get older and they’re going to need help around the house. We’re going to discuss the amount of help they’ll need and how to approach them about it. But first things first, when dealing with your senior loved ones in New York City & Queens County, remember: it’s never about how old they are; it’s about what they can do on their own.
Be objective always and make astute observations. Use all your insight and knowledge to empathize with your senior. There are telltale signs that your loved one may very well need assistance in the future. By asking good questions and paying attention, you can spot all of these signs yourself.
· If your senior cannot perform basic day to day tasks, then it is time to seek assistance. These tasks may include but are not limited to: walking, dressing, carrying on a conversation, cooking and eating, or keeping track of their own medication.
· If your senior cannot keep up with their daily hygiene, like bathing, dressing themselves properly, or keeping breath and body odors under control, you should begin thinking of caregiving.
· An independent senior is thoughtful and responsible. However, when unpaid bills pile up and the organization of prescriptions becomes a difficult task, it’s time to consider seeking help. An unbalanced checkbook, failure to return calls or the inability to keep good and fresh stock of groceries can be another indicator.
